Glucocorticoid use, while beneficial for many inflammatory conditions, is associated with a variety of complications including osteoporosis. In 2001, the American College of Rheumatology published its recommendations for the treatment and prevention of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Since that report, new pharmacologic therapies for the treatment of osteoporosis have been approved and additional information on previously recommended medications has been reported. Additionally, the methodology used to establish recommendation statements has evolved. The 2010 updated ACR guidelines, developed using the RAND/UCLA appropriateness method in conjunction with a systemic review, are reported herein.
